The question of how best to integrate newly arrived migrant children with little or no knowledge of German into the German school system is one that is currently preoccupying not only teachers and head teachers, but also education authorities at state and local level.

How can these pupils be included into school life at the earliest possible stage, while at the same time giving them the most comprehensive language support possible? What kind of support and staff development needs to be provided for teachers? How can stakeholders at the local level work together to help give all pupils access to education and participation? These are the questions being addressed by the network Newly arrived migrant children in schools.
