Prof. Dr. Michael Becker-Mrotzek is a member of the Standing Scientific Commission of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) and has been a Full Professor of German Language and Didactics at the University of Cologne since 1999. His research interests lie in the broad area of language in the context of education, and particularly in the fields of language intervention and the teaching of writing and conversational skills. From 2012 to 2023, he was director of the Mercator Institute for Literacy and Language Education, and also scientific director of the Language and Education System Department. In addition, Prof. Dr. Becker-Mrotzek served as spokesman for the joint governmental and federal initiative Education through Language and Literacy (BiSS) from 2013 to February 2020, and has been spokesman for BiSS-Transfer since 1 March 2020. As part of a nationwide initiative to improve teacher education called Teacher Education – Shaping Heterogeneity and Inclusion, he is in charge of the early-career academic development programme. Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Becker-Mrotzek is a member of academic advisory council of the Universität Regensburg Teacher Education Centre (RUL), the expert commission for the improvement of school quality in Berlin and the expert commission of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), as well as spokesman of the Advisory Board of the School of Education at the University of Salzburg.
