Wir als Mercator-Institut für Mehrsprachigkeit und sprachliche Bildung verstehen sprachliche Bildung in einer mehrsprachigen Gesellschaft als Querschnittsaufgabe, die gemeinschaftlich von diversen Bildungsakteur:innen bearbeitet werden muss. Wir arbeiten daher einem ko-konstruktiven Ansatz folgend bei Forschung, Lehre und Transfer in enger Kooperation mit Schulen und Kitas zusammen. Zudem ist das Mercator-Institut mit renommierten Forschungseinrichtungen aus der bildungswissenschaftlichen Community sowie einschlägigen Entscheidungsträgern aus der Bildungsadministration, der Bildungspolitik und dem Bildungsjournalismus vernetzt. Unser Ziel ist es, Expertisen und Erfahrungen im Feld Mehrsprachigkeit und sprachliche Bildung zu bündeln, um Bildungsangebote zu verbessern, Forschung zu vertiefen und Erkenntnisse adressat:innenorientiert zu kommunizieren.
Netzwerke
Das Mercator-Institut ist Mitglied im Leibniz-Forschungsnetzwerk Bildungspotenziale (LERN). In dem Verbund haben sich 29 Forschungseinrichtungen zusammengeschlossen, um ihre Expertise zu bündeln und die Sichtbarkeit der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft in Bildungsfragen bei Forschungsförderern, politischen Entscheidungsträger:innen, Bildungsadministration und in der Öffentlichkeit zu erhöhen. Zudem ist das Mercator-Institut Partner im Verbund Forschungsdaten Bildung (VerbundFDB), dessen Ziel es unter anderem ist, Daten mit Bezug zur Bildungsforschung zu sichern und zugänglich zu machen.
Unter Beteiligung des Mercator-Instituts stärken seit 2013 die Initiative “Bildung durch Sprache und Schrift” (BiSS) und ihre Nachfolgerin BiSS-Transfer die sprachliche Bildung sowie die Lese- und Schreibförderung von Kindern und Jugendlichen. Seit 2020 lag die Gesamtkoordination der Bund-Länder-Initiative “Transfer von Sprache und Schrift” (BiSS-Transfer) am Mercator-Institut und wird seit 2026 durch die Leitstelle BiSS-Transfer, die ebenfalls am Mercator-Institut angesiedelt ist, koordiniert. Ziel war und ist es weiterhin, die Angebote zur Sprachbildung allen Ländern zur Verfügung zu stellen und den Transfer in die Praxis von Kita, Schule und Unterricht deutschlandweit zu stärken. Die Leitstelle wird bis Ende 2027 durch das Bundesministerium für Bildung, Familie, Senioren, Frauen und Jugend (BMBFSFJ) gefördert. Mittlerweile setzen bundesweit über 4.200 Schulen und Kitas die im Rahmen der Initiative wissenschaftlich entwickelten und erprobten Maßnahmen um. Mehr als 40.000 Personen - vor allem Fach- und Lehrkräfte - wurden über die BiSS-Blended-Learning-Angebote fortgebildet.
Auch am ZMI – Zentrum für Mehrsprachigkeit und Integration, einer Kooperationseinrichtung der Stadt Köln, der Bezirksregierung Köln und der Universität zu Köln, ist das Mercator-Institut beteiligt. Ziel des ZMI ist es, dauerhaft an der Etablierung, Fortführung und Ausweitung der gemeinsamen Aktivitäten zu Mehrsprachigkeit und Integration zu arbeiten.

DIPF |Leibniz Institute for Research and Information in Education
Through empirical educational research, digital infrastructure, and targeted knowledge transfer, the DIPF helps address challenges in the education system. The knowledge it generates about education supports academia, policymakers, and practitioners in the field of education. The DIPF is a foundation under public law and is funded by the federal government and the states of Hesse and Berlin.

ProDaZ - erman as a Second Language in All Subjects
The ProDaZ pilot project — German as a Second Language in All Subjects—is based at the Institute for DaZ/DaF at the University of Duisburg-Essen and is funded by the Mercator Foundation.
The goal of ProDaZ is to help teachers in all three phases of their professional education and training—that is, during their undergraduate studies, their teaching internship, and their professional careers—develop the skills needed to provide instruction that fosters students’ linguistic and subject-specific development consistently across all subjects.
